HP Garage

The HP Garage is California Historic Landmark No. 976 — the Birthplace of Silicon Valley.

An HP project to preserve for future generations its most famous piece of real estate has now been completed. The project turned the clock back on the original house, shed and garage at 367 Addison Avenue, Palo Alto, to conditions much as they were in 1939, when the founders established the now legendary Hewlett-Packard partnership.

The Palo Alto garage at 367 Addison Avenue is generally regarded by historians, engineers and others — in and outside of the high-tech industry — as one of the most significant artifacts of the electronics industry’s early days in Silicon Valley. In fact, after becoming a designated landmark by the city of Palo Alto and a California Registered Landmark by the State, the garage was dedicated as the “Birthplace of Silicon Valley” back in 1989.

Over the years, many engineers, techies, dignitaries and others visited the garage where Bill and Dave worked until they outgrew the space in 1940. Yet time began to take its toll on the structure. And that’s exactly why HP made a commitment to preserve this piece of history as a visual reminder of the industry’s grass-root beginnings.

While the HP garage is not open for public tours, individual visitors and small groups may view and photograph the property and landmark from the sidewalk and driveway. Addison Avenue remains a quiet residential neighborhood, and HP urges you to respect the privacy of our neighbors.

The modest house at 369 Addison borders a large cluster of handsome homes known as the Professorville district of Palo Alto. The district was so named because many of its homes were built for professors of the nearby Stanford University.
